Have You Violated The Oath Of Office?
By Jerry Smith
FOREWORD: When you took the oath of office to be a firefighter did you not raise your right hand and say out loud: “I, ______, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the state of _______, and that I will faithfully and impartially, to the best of my ability, discharge all the duties of the office of the Fire Department in _______, as now or hereafter required by law.”

Facing First Responder Anxiety!
5/11/07
INTRODUCTION: Asking a first responder to talk about what they fear most in their profession may not be an easy task. In fact, personal pride might cause a person to mask those unpleasant images that often replay within 3 months or sooner after experiencing a life-altering event. No, we don’t like to admit our vulnerability even after some abnormal event may have seriously affected us. After all, we work hard to maintain our composure and show strength in the work we do and the actions we put forth on the front lines. However, something is just not right. I have never felt like this before and now my loved ones at home are becoming visibly affected by my vocal mood swings that erupt with little warning.
Emergency Vehicle Seat Belts... What Good Are They?
2/28/07
INTRODUCTION: Too often, responding firefighters die before they reach a destination because they were not belted-in/restrained after a crash with another vehicle. Just recently a fire engine on emergency response was turning onto West 14th Street from West Grand Boulevard at about 6:30 pm when it was struck by a speeding SUV traveling at a high rate of speed. Tragically in Detroit, Michigan, the fire engine's driver would be thrown through the windshield; and then rolled over by the driverless fire apparatus. The company officer would also be ejected through the windshield and hospitalized with critical injuries.

More Than My Share Of Car Fires
12/26/06
My city seems to have more than its share of car fires. I would say that about half are deliberately set. When a car is going from stem to stern, and particularly if it is burning in both the engine and passenger compartments upon arrival, look for the gasoline pattern. Arson is a pretty good bet.
Are Abandoned Buildings A Menace To First Responders?
11/30/06
INTRODUCTION: Government health & safety codes require property owners to secure a vacated structure and prevent unlawful entry into such location. There is no doubt that abandoned/vacant buildings over time do threaten public safety in many neighborhoods across the landscape of America. Who could forget the infamous icehouse inferno in Worcester MA several years ago, where a tipped over candle and the resulting inferno would trap and kill six firefighters. Yes, these brave firefighters not knowing the victims had already left the building were searching for two transients believed to be inside this smoke filled abandoned building. The question remains in 2006 and beyond... are you aware of all such buildings/structures in your first-in district and are they clearly identified as such in case of fire?

HOLIDAY FIRES CAN BE PREVENTED – SAVING LIVES AND PRESERVING PROPERTY
12/9/03
The holiday season is a joyful time of generosity and warmth, of songs and family and traditions. It is also, unfortunately, a time when we see an increase in house fires – fueled in part by holiday decorations, candles and Christmas trees. Fires caused by candles, for instance, increase fourfold during the holidays. Some 200 house fires occur each year where Christmas trees are the initial source of ignition.

New Technology In Gas Water Heaters Can Save Lives
7/8/03 7:38:00 PM
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Picture this: a plastic can filled with gasoline is innocently left on the garage floor, near a gas water heater. A 4-year-old boy playing in the garage tips over the can, spilling the gasoline
and sending flammable vapors into the air. The vapors reach the water heater, sparking a flashback fire that takes the life of the young child. Tragically, similar real-life incidents involving gas water heaters take the lives of or severely injure children and adults across the country each year.
